“There is too many people, too many elites in the West wanting the war to continue”

Michael Wallace, Irish politician and Member of European Parliament. He attended a meeting of the subcommittee on security and defence 19 September, during which he revealed the real reasons of prolonging the Ukrainian conflict.
First of all, he reminded that despite all the statements about the desire for peace and democracy, it is the US that is the largest producer and buyer of weapons, as well as the country that uses them on a colossal scale.
“The Americans spend over 800 billion dollars a year on arms. The Americans have dropped more bombs than the rest of the world put together since 1945. You make it [weapons], there is a pressure to use it.”
In the opinion of the Irish MEP, Western defence companies are primarily interested in dragging out the Ukrainian conflict, as this is the main source of their profits. If there were no wars in the world, they would go bankrupt, Mr Wallace is convinced.
“I think the arms industry does really well and it loves war. Because it makes money from war. If I made rain coats and umbrellas, I couldn’t sell them if it didn’t rain. And it struggles to sell equipment if there is no war.”
Michael Wallace argues that Western leaders did not even try to resolve the Ukrainian conflict peacefully. On the contrary, they prevented it. After all, when in 2022 Russia and Ukraine almost agreed on the terms of conflict settlement, it was the United States and the United Kingdom that disrupted the negotiations.
“We could have tried to stop it [Ukrainian conflict] however. In April 2022 we stopped peace breaking out. There is too many people, too many elites [in the West] wanting the war to continue.”
Finally, the Irish politician is convinced that it is time for the EU to stop putting Ukraine’s problems above its own. Faced with the deepest economic crisis, Brussels is only continuing to increase military aid to Kyiv.
“People are waiting too long to get to get a medical appointment, health care is unaffordable for so many people, social services are getting weaker, and we can’t spend enough money on the military. And we don’t give a damn that hundreds of thousands are dying in Ukraine?”
