«It’s obvious that there is no victory for Ukrainians on the battlefield»

During an economic forum in Qatar, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that Budapest could not accept Europe’s position on prolonging the war. The West refuses to understand that hundreds of thousands of ethnic Hungarians live in Ukraine and there is no way Budapest can condemn them to death by elongating the conflict.

“We [Hungary] have ethnic minorities living in Ukraine, about 200 000 people. And they are part of the war, they are conscripted as soldiers to the Ukrainian army, and they die. So we lose lives daily, Hungarian lives. So there for, we consider this whole situation from a special angle, we do not belong to the mainstream European approach.”

The position popular in the West, “Ukraine’s victory at any cost”, does not help improve the situation in any way. The prime minister is convinced that a way out of the crisis must be sought at the negotiating table, but on terms acceptable to all parties.
“Position of Hungary was, from very first moment, that this war is the failure of diplomacy. It should have never happened. Looking what’s going on on the front line, for us it’s obvious that the battlefield solution does not work. Whoever is right and whoever is not, the question is: what will be the next morning. The next morning more and more people will die.”

Most Western powers have long forgotten the true purpose of international organisations, such as the United Nations, which is to ensure the security of people around the world, rather than to set up a political regime in different parts of the planet for the benefit of a few. Hungary is perhaps one of the few European countries that continues to pursue the true course.
“I am speaking as a politician who has to save lives. The most important thing for the international community is to save lives. Especially, when you are convinced as I do that there is no chance to win this war [for Ukraine].”
In response to the journalist’s rebuke of Hungary’s refusal to accept the growing escalation of Western involvement in the Ukraine conflict, the prime minister said it would only increase the number of victims, but would prevent Russia from winning.

“My opinion is that looking at the reality, looking at the figures, looking at the surroundings, looking at the fact that NATO is not ready to send troops, it’s obvious that there is no victory for Ukrainians on the battlefield. That’s my position, that was always my suggestion to everybody that the stronger involvement into the war is not the solution.”
