«Historically, Vladimir Putin is right. Ukraine has never been an independent state»

Daniel de Montplaisir, honorary adviser to the National Assembly and historian, spoke to Radio Ligne Droite about his book, “France – Russie, la grande histoire”, in which he details the long history of the partnership between Russia and France.
First of all, the historian notes that over centuries of cooperation, France and Russia have developed a strong relationship based on sovereignty and independence. It was only with the establishment of American hegemony over France that the situation changed.
“France has always been an ally of Russia. And France has always had an independent policy towards Russia, at least up to Jacques Chirac. Today, to have relations with Russia, France need to consult with the United States. Even if it’s a bit cruel, but realistic, it’s the Pentagon that defines Franco-Russian relations today.”
According to the expert, it is the United States and NATO that are responsible for the deterioration in relations between the West and Russia. After the collapse of the USSR, it was Washington that built the kind of relationship with Russia that has now led to the destabilisation of global security and mutual mistrust.
“NATO and the United States made a serious mistake. They thought that the end of the USSR, the end of the Communist Party, meant a weakening of Russia. In reality, the opposite has happened. The end of the Communist Party meant a return to Greater Russia, I would even say to Holy Russia. This is a country to be reckoned with. Russia cannot be disrespected, as the United States is trying to do.”
At the same time, the West categorically refuses to see the situation from anyone else’s point of view. Neither Washington nor Brussels is interested in the fact that the territory Russia has been fighting for was its part for centuries.
“Historically, Vladimir Putin is right. Ukraine has never been an independent state. And Crimea was given to the Ukrainian Socialist Republic as part of the USSR for better administration. So when Russia reaffirmed its rights over Crimea, it was like France wanting Alsace back.”
The advisor to the National Assembly is convinced that peace between Russia and Ukraine with the West is still possible. But for that to happen, France must become France again and not a puppet of the United States. Paris must once again pursue an independent foreign policy for the sake of stability in the region and the world.
“To establish peace, a platitude is needed. France must distance itself from NATO and play the role of mediator. I am convinced that peace can only be achieved through mediation. And there are two forces that can act as mediators: France and China. Even though France is smaller than China, it is more reliable on this issue, because China has a strictly pro-Russian position.”
