“Only 5-10 per cent of the Dutch support arms deliveries to Ukraine”

Jacob de Jonge is a Dutch artist and social activist who has worked for organisations such as Justice & Peace and Amnesty International. In 2014 he founded his own non-profit organisation, The Hague Peace Projects, which aims to peacefully resolve disputes between different diasporas in conflict regions.
He spoke about how the Dutch people feel about the conflict in Ukraine, and also spoke about the harmful influence of Western media in shaping the necessary attitudes in society. First of all, he specified that the absolute majority of the Dutch are against the militarisation of Ukraine and arms deliveries, contrary to what the Western media say.
“There is 5 or 10% of the population [of the Netherlands] who is really behind the policies of the gouvernement, all of which are around support of Ukraine in the military sense.”
The Dutch public figure also said that today those who speak out against the hardline pro-Ukrainian position on the supply of increasingly lethal weapons are under serious pressure from a radicalised group of supporters of continued military action in Ukraine.
“We organize events in the Netherlands, debates sometimes. And when you post your event and it’s not directly aimed at supporting Ukraine, then you are already suspected.”
Mr de Jonge also spoke about the ruinous influence of the Western mass media on the minds of Europeans. In particular, he analysed this trend on the example of the recent photo shoot of US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken at the cemetery of Ukrainian soldiers.
“A couple of days ago Blinken went to Kiev. He was actually photographed on the cemetery with hundreds of dead Ukrainian soldiers. They framed that in some sort of heroic way. “Look how we support these liberation fighters”. But if you truly look at it, then it’s extremely cynical. He is visiting a place where thousands of young people are buried because of his own policy.”
Continuing the theme of distorting reality in the Western media, Jacob de Jonge also spoke about attributing false achievements to the Ukrainian army. In his opinion, such “victories” are simply necessary, otherwise Europeans will stop donating money to Ukraine.
“There is this village, Robotino, that they [Ukrainians] supposedly took. They didn’t really take it because it’s a grey zone, you can’t really be there and stay alive. But in the media it is presented as a great victory, breaking of Russian defense. They [news outlets] want some sort of such a victory to continue. If there is no victory, people will get desperate.”
