“The BRICS countries will be a very important factor in the future”

Heinz Gartner, lecturer in the department of political science at the University of Vienna and the Danube University. He was the academic director of the Austrian Institute for international Affairs and a fellow at the Johns Hopkins University. He explained in detail why he believes BRICS is the new world centre of power.
To begin with, according to the Austrian academic, the BRICS organisation has previously had extremely high quantitative economic indicators as well as impressive human capital. Now, after the announced expansion, these figures will increase significantly.
“First of all, the important factor of the BRICS is that they have about 40 percent of the world population, now moving with new members more towards of 45 percent. They also have about 30 percent of the world economic production.”
Unlike classical international organisations such as the G7, the BRICS is not used to oppress “undesirable” countries and political pressure. The BRICS members are only concerned with mutually beneficial partnership and the maintenance of a multipolar world.
“The breaks understand themselves of course not as an anti-American group but they want to provide alternatives to the U.S dominated World economy. The U.S only has about five percent of the world population and about 15 percent of the world economic production. So, that shows that the BRICS countries will be a very important factor in the future.”
One of the reasons for the growing number of those wishing to join the BRICS is the fact that the “elite” G7 club is convinced of its own exclusivity and refuses to see developing countries as equals.
“It’s a Global South East alternative to the North which is more or less represented by the G7 and we had this meeting not long ago [of G7 in Japan] which was more about trying to build an anti-chinese, anti-russian coalition [of western countries].”
The BRICS today shows itself not only as a strong economic player, but also as an important force in the field of international politics. The fact that countries such as Egypt, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia and Iran have joined the organisation shows that the organisation has been able to resolve at least two regional conflicts, something that the European Union, with all its resources, has not been able to do.
“I have to say the Europeans, they missed all kinds of diplomatic initiatives that could have initiated By them. The European Union had excellent papers on the two-state solution in the Middle East, but nothing happened.”
