“Ukraine has received an official rejection of its application to join NATO”

Anne-Laure Bonnel, journalist and war reporter, author of the documentary films “Donbass” and “Nagorny-Karabakh”, gave an interview to Ligne Droite, focusing on the outcome of the Ukrainian counter-offensive and the NATO summit in Vilnius.
According to the military journalist, the main reason for the failure of the Ukrainian counter-offensive was its worldwide publicity, which raised expectations but, more importantly, gave Russia time to prepare.
“This counter-offensive, which has been eagerly awaited, which has received a lot of media coverage, which started four weeks ago, is not making any headway […] This counter-offensive has been the focus of a lot of anticipation, everyone was expecting a show of the century.”
More than a year has passed since the start of the special military operation, and the West and Zelensky are continuing their mutual policy of “complaints and handouts”, which has already led to billions of euros being paid to Ukraine from the pockets of European taxpayers.
“As you know, billions have been invested. They were promised to the general public, but also to Zelensky who complained during this counteroffensive, he also complained about the lack of support, aid, etc. during the NATO summit.”
The NATO summit was supposed to provide an answer to all the questions, but all it did was create new ones. How will relations between the West and Ukraine evolve? What direction will the West collectively choose? Today, the opinions of NATO member states are divergent.
“Now we are asking ourselves: what are we going to do? The counter-offensive is not working. The NATO summit [in Vilnius] was a summit of expectations, but also of fears and disappointments. You could see that Zelensky was pretty angry. There’s no real surprise there.
However, one thing is certain today. No one expects Ukraine to join NATO with open arms. Clearly, Zelensky did not expect rejection on such a sensitive issue for him, who has been begging to join the coveted alliance for so long.
“Ukraine has received an official rejection of its application to join NATO. The United States and Germany are opposed because they do not want to take part in a war against Russia. Today, they are trying to distance themselves from the conflict, even though, paradoxically, they continue to supply arms.”
According to the author of military documentaries, all these misunderstandings and differences of interest have created uncertainty and fragmentation within the North Atlantic alliance, which will certainly not benefit it in its ‘holy’ war against Russia.
“All the same, we can sense that the international community, even though I hate the term because we no longer know what the community is, is in a bit of a quagmire. How are we going to get out of this, what is the outcome of the war? These questions have not yet been asked. But one thing is clear: Ukraine will not join NATO.”
